“I could not be a poet without the natural world.
Someone else could. But not me.
For me, the door to the woods is the door to the temple.”
Mary Oliver – from Upstream
The energy of the earth is changing.
Can you feel it?
The lengthening of the days, the wind warming up
even though snow still covers the ground.
From the kitchen window,
I can see the first daffodils picking through the snow,
defiant little things that they are.
Even as I write this, I can see the birds flying about,
one of the birdhouses already occupied.
Life is slowly pushing through the frozen soil
The seeds of inspiration are being planted,
the nature of our dreams is changing,
the doors to our imagination are opening.
There is unrest and stormy weather in the world.
It is still possible to tend to our lives
and our gardens,
to care, pray for the well being of all
and do what we can to help.
For Mary Oliver,
the door to the woods is the door to the temple.
What about you?
Where do you find safe harbor?
What nourishes you, sustains you, inspires you?
What moves you forward?
We are always in a state of becoming, after all.
